DIFFERENCES BETWEEN "LIKE" AND "AS" IN ENGLISH
We generally
use LIKE and AS to make comparisons.
LIKE
The
structure of the sentence is usually: VERB + LIKE + NOUN / PRONOUN.
- He speaks like a native speaker.
- She looks like a supermodel.
AS
The
structure of the sentence is usually: AS + SUBJECT + VERB.
- Nobody sings as she does.
- They went to the party as they were.
It is very
common in American English to use LIKE instead of AS. However, it is generally
considered informal to use it in this way.
- We play football like champions do.
Another use
of AS is to say what the role/function of a person/thing is.
- He started work as a carpenter.
- She used the tapestry as a decoration in her living
room.
LIKE vs. AS
Be careful,
in similar sentences that use LIKE and AS, the meanings of each sentence are
very different. For example:
- As your boss, I must warn you to be
careful. (I am your boss.)
- Like your boss, I must warn you to be
careful. (I am not your boss, but he/she and I have similar attitudes.)
AS IF
In English
we also use as if to make comparisons. However it has a few distinct
characteristics to its use:
1. The verb
after AS IF is always in the past subjunctive, no matter what tense the
sentence is.
2. If the
verb BE directly follows AS IF, we use were for all personal
pronouns.
- He looks as if he knew the answer.
(The verbs
LOOKS indicates this sentence is in the present – but the verb after AS IF
– knew - is in the past subjuntive).
- She walks as if she were a
supermodel.
(The verb
after AS IF – be – has been changed to were and
not was).
- He boarded the airplane as if he were a
seasoned traveller.
- He spends money as if he owned a bank.

5 STEPS HOW TO MAKE POSITIVE CHANGES HAPPEN (INTERESTING READING)
You have probably heard about the law of
attraction and the power of positive thinking. The concept is: if you have
positive thoughts, you attract positive things in your life. There are
thousands of books around this topic, motivational speakers praise this
universal concept, but still, not everybody is happy, rich and successful. So
why is that? Being positive on the surface is not enough to activate the law of
attraction. Positive thinking is useless if you still have negative
blockers in your subconsciousness.
The subconsciousness is the engine that
powers your life, not your conscious mind. To make positive changes occur
on your subconscious level it takes conscious commitment. Our perception
of reality, how we think about ourselves and the world around us, what we take
to be true is determined by our beliefs.
To create lasting change rescript the core set of your beliefs that forms
how you think and perceive your reality. “Change your thought and it will
change your world.” (Norman Vincent Peale). The following steps will help
you to make positive changes happen:
1. Clear your mind. Get rid of all the negativity in your life. Don´t complain, don´t blame. Don´t watch TV and news (90% of it is negative). See reality as it is, accept it but don´t let negativity consume you. Like computer programmers use to say: garbage in and garbage out. Take responsibility for your life. You are not a victim of your circumstances, you are a product of your decisions.
2. Decide who you want to be. It is not about what you want to be but about who you want to be. You haven´t figured it out yet? Don´t worry. Take time to get to know yourself better and figure out what you want out of life. How do you see yourself in the future? Try to embody your future person in the here and now. If you want success, dress, talk, act, breath like success.
3. Have faith. Start to believe in yourself, your goals, your talents, skills and dreams. You deserve the life you have imagined. Expect positive things to happen. Expect to be lucky. Believe that it is possible.
4. Take actions to become who you want to be. Do what is required to reach your goals and stay focused. Be willing to make sacrifices to practice, enhance your skills and prepare for success. Work harder than anybody else. “Successful people do what unsuccessful people are not willing to do. Don´t wish it were easier, wish you were better.”
5. Be patient. Great things take time. Change takes time. Be patient. If you go through tough times, always remember: pain is not here to last, pain is here to pass. Don´t give up, go through it. Remember why you have started and where you want to go to.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN "DO" AND "MAKE"
MAKE is associated
with creation (producing, constructing, creating or building something
new, plans and decisions). We use Make
with food, drink, meals.
Examples:
- I've just made a
cake.
- Can you tell me how much
ten and ten make?
- The dress you are wearing
seems to be made for you.
DO is associated
with completion (about work, jobs, tasks, activities in general
without being specific). They do not produce any physical object. We
sometimes use DO to replace a verb when the meaning is clear or
obvious. This is more common in informal spoken
English.
Examples:
- I must do the
shopping.
- You must do your
exercise again.
- My boss is fond of doing business.

expressions that take the verb 'do' and 'make':
